7 Ways to Find Eye Allergy Relief

Allergy season has arrived! If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you aren’t alone. In fact, 60 million people experience symptoms of seasonal allergies every year. If you are one of the many who suffer from seasonal allergies and are looking for relief, these seven tips can help you prepare for allergy season.

1) Take Allergy Medication Ahead of Allergy Season

You can ease the impact of allergies by taking medicine before the allergy season begins. When your immune system identifies an allergen and begins to overreact, it’s already too late. This is when your eyes begin to water, itch, hurt, and become red and swollen. If you wait to take allergy medicine once the allergies have already set in, it may not help relieve your symptoms.

2) Rid Your Home of Allergens

Allergens make their way into the home and build up on several items in your home, such as flooring, curtains, furniture, and bedsheets. Here are several ways to help keep allergens out of your home:

  • Keep Your Bedding Clean
Even though many allergens are outside, there are still a few in the home. Make sure that your sheets and other bedding are all washed on a regular basis. This will lower your exposure to dust mites and other indoor allergens. Hot water is a must for dispelling allergens. So make sure to wash your bedding in at least 130-degree water.

  • Choose Mopping Over Sweeping
Sweeping your floor seems innocent enough. However, it can cause your allergies to flare up. When you sweep, allergens are kicked up into the air, increasing your chances of exposure. A damp mop or floor pad can actually trap allergens safely without dispersing them into the air. This method is a great way to remove allergens from your home, helping keep it as clean and allergy free as possible!

  • Go for Hard Flooring
Carpets and rugs can attract allergens and make for difficult cleaning. But hard floors like wood, tile, and even linoleum are much easier to clean. This can help you keep a handle on the allergens in your home and keep your eyes happy and healthy. As mentioned above, when you have hard floors, it is easier to remove allergens with a damp pad or mop. That way they never have a chance to cause a problem.

  • Keep Mold Away
One of the ways to help ease your allergies is by keeping mold at bay, which is also essential for healthy eyes. If you are in a climate conducive to mold, or even if you just want to be proactive, installing a dehumidifier and controlling the temperature in your home will prevent the growth and development of mold. Did you know that the kitchen and bathroom are both hot spots for mold growth? Be sure to use bleach when you clean these areas to avoid any future problems with mold. By reducing the presence of these allergens indoors, you can also minimize eye irritation and discomfort, leading to greater relief during allergy season.

3) Plan Ahead for Outdoor Activities

There are certain times of day when pollen counts are higher than others. Pollen is most active in the mid-morning and early evening. If you are outside during those times, the risk of reaction is much higher. If you can, use added allergy protection during the mid-morning and early evening hours. During the mid-morning and early evening, you may want to utilize air conditioning, rather than open windows, as well. By minimizing exposure during these peak pollen times, you can significantly reduce eye irritation and discomfort.

4) Watch Your Diet

Unfortunately, even if you have followed all the steps above, you may still be at risk for your allergies to act up. There are cases where people with seasonal allergies will have a cross-reaction to certain foods; this is called oral allergy syndrome. Oral allergy syndrome occurs when the immune system confuses proteins in food with protein in pollen causing an allergic reaction or causing your symptoms to worsen.

5) Use Artificial Tears Eye Drops

Artificial tears eye drops can also help temporarily relieve the effects of your allergies by washing allergens from your eyes. Using eye drops can help provide relief to your eyes.

6) Consider Saline Rinses

There are many things you can do to treat your symptoms if allergies have already struck. A good saline rinse can help soothe your eye pain and flush out allergens. This is a simple and safe solution for eye allergy care, and it will help ensure that your eyes are back in top form today! When rinsing, be sure to tilt your head and rinse from the inner corner of your eye (closest to the nose) to the outer. That way you flush all the allergens out without splashing them into your other eye!

7) Visit Your Eye Doctor

Work with your eye doctor to get ahead of allergy season. If you’re concerned that your symptoms may be something more than allergies, inform your eye doctor as it could be a more serious condition.
