Vision insurance is not something we think about every day, so we understand you may have some questions.
Speak with a vision consultant today.
Using a VSP Individual Vision Plan is easy. First, pick the vision plan that's right for you and the payment option that best fits your needs. Then, visit an eye doctor, (going in-network will help you get the most from your benefits) to receive an eye exam. If vision correction is needed, your eye doctor can provide you a prescription and help pick glasses or contacts to best fit your style. You pay your vision insurance copay at the eye doctor's office along with any added options outside of your VSP vision plan coverage. The eye doctor's office will take care of processing your benefit claims.
Yes! If you'd like to include your spouse or family members, please choose a two-person or family vision plan when you enroll. You can also buy an individual vision plan for a friend or family member who doesn't have vision coverage.
While VSP Vision Care does not coordinate benefits with other medical plans or benefits, you can use your vision plan in addition to your other health plans.
Making an eye exam appointment is easy. Go to Find a Doctor and pick any eye doctor you'd like. At your eye exam, tell them you have VSP vision insurance and they'll take care of the rest. To get the most out of your VSP vision plan benefits, visit a Premier Program practice.
When you visit a VSP network eye doctor, there are no claim forms to submit. If you choose to see an out-of-VSP network eye doctor or vision care provider, you may incur higher out of pocket costs and will have to submit a claim form and include any itemized receipts.
Large chain optical centers such as Costco, Sears, Walmart, Cohen's, etc. are not VSP in-network for vision plans sold on VSPDirect.com. Please be aware if you choose to go to an out-of-VSP-network provider, you'll have to submit the claims yourself and will be reimbursed at lesser out-of-network vision plan coverage amounts.
Typical savings for VSP members is $356!* There are different vision plan copays and coverage options depending on the VSP plan you choose. If you select a lens enhancement that isn't covered with a copay, you'll still receive 20% savings on that option at the eye doctor's office. Below you'll find an example of the typical VSP vision plan savings you can expect on an annual plan.
Example Savings* | What You Would Pay | ||
---|---|---|---|
Without a plan | With a VSP plan | Savings | |
Comprehensive Exam | $205 | $15 | $190 |
Frames | $244 | $75 | $169 |
Rx Lenses | $111 | $25 | $86 |
Optional Lens Enhancements i.e. scratch resistant, anti-glare etc. |
$268 | $153 | $115 |
Annual VSP Plan Cost | $204 | -$204 | |
Total | $828 | $472 | $356 |

You can use your VSP Individual Vision Plan benefits the same day you enroll. There's no waiting period. After you enroll, you can start using your benefits immediately!
Yes, but if you use your plan out-of-network, you may incur higher out of pocket costs. You'll also need to complete a claim form and include any itemized receipts. Out-of-network coverage is not available in Massachusetts and Washington, and coverage varies in Maryland. If you have questions about out-of-network coverage, contact us at 800.785.0699.

I am a retired employee and need to carry my own vision plan. VSP has provided coverage for years and I am happy with the ease of accessing and using the plan.
I had VSP through my company prior, then when they were sold we had a different vision insurance that wasn’t that great. So I looked up VSP and signed up for an individual plan.
I enrolled because I retired at 62 and do not qualify for Medicare. This is an excellent insurance. Affordable. I'm considering enrolling for dental care insurance too.
I usually have vision insurance thru my work but since I went private I am responsible for my own insurance! I was told about you guys by a family member and how solid of a company you are and I was not disappointed! This is the first time in my 48 years my glasses have costed so much and I am very grateful for the plan I have with you! Thank you so much!
I enrolled with VSP because I had their vision coverage in the past through employment. My current employer didn't offer vision coverage but I knew VSP was a good value. I'm glad I did enroll. VSP has saved me money.
I was so pleased to be a newly retired person, was used to corporate vision coverage and found single retired coverage is just as good. Very happy!
I have to get to my own insurance since I am unemployed. Having VSP for my eye coverage is fantastic. The premiums are so reasonable and the benefits are exceptional. My eye doctor is part of the VSP network, which makes it even better!
I enrolled because I did not have eye care insurance. The process was done quickly over the phone. The eye care provider I am using accepts it. The plan was affordable and worth it. There were not any issues during this journey. I am pleased and recommend VSP.
I've worn glasses for 60 years so I had become accustomed to paying for them on my own. I found VSP several years ago and it is wonderful. I pay once a year. My Rx is complicated. And the more problems you have, the more expensive in can be. VSP pays about 2/3 of my bill. I highly recommend them.
VSP has saved me hundreds of dollars on glasses over the years, and I've kept it even after retirement. The annual fee is the same as the cost of my annual exam, so all the discounts after that are "gravy".
VSP is the first vision insurance I have had. I needed to get up to date on my eye care, new glasses, lenses, exam, etc. I started with a very basic and affordable plan. The price per month worked for me. After all the services were done, I saved about 48% on the total cost! My eyes are good to go.
I believe I originally enrolled thru an employer but continued as an individual plan holder when I retired so I have been with VSP for years. VSP is THE most painless, affordable insurance coverage I've ever had. And the few times I have needed customer service I have received a prompt response from an actual human. They encourage me to maintain regular eye exams (even more important as we age), and have taken much of the sting out of the cost of new eyeglasses; particularly important as everything around us gets more expensive & we are trying to survive on a fixed income. They are unquestionably a good bargain that everyone should take advantage of, whether you are retired like me or have a young, growing family.
I enrolled in the plan because my Advantage plan did not cover my Eye Doctor who I have been with for years. VSP covered so much of my bill it made my life much easier.
VSP has been very helpful after retiring and needing a vision plan. It has definitely saved us money along with receiving excellent eye care and glasses. Very grateful for VSP vision plan.
I enrolled because I didn’t have eye insurance and VSP coverage is good to have and I didn’t have to spend a lot of money for my glasses and lenses. Service is excellent.
VSP has been the best choice for me for last couple of years. I have been able to get a great deal for my glasses. I’m glad I was recommended this vision care. Definitely will recommend to others.
Medicare doesn't cover vision as I am retired so VSP has given me the coverage I needed and saved me money. It has been great so far!
I am very glad that I enrolled in VSP. As a person now on a fixed monthly income, being enrolled in a VSP plan has been very helpful. VSP helps to allow yearly vision checkups with the help of being insured. One suggestion I would like to offer is to yearly send out information regarding the different plans offered by VSP and the costs as to allow the member to decide if an upgrade/change in coverage is needed.
I enrolled over 30 years ago while I was teaching. After retiring, I continued with VSP. The discounts save me over 50%. I do wish you would offer $200 towards frames. That the greatest cost to me. Otherwise, love my savings!
I’m on ssi and have to pay all my supplement insurance. I’m so grateful for my VSP insurance. Easy to get and I very seldom have to pay a lot for my vision test and glasses.
Each year that I have used my benefits, it has been a great experience. I am able to afford the glasses I choose. The list of participating optometrists is amazing. If I am unhappy with one, the next year I can choose another. Save so much, that I am able to add on enhancements. Thank you VSP.
I have had VSP for five or six years and I'm very satisfied with it. My husband has BCBS and mine has better coverage than his. It covers my exams and a large portion of my glasses. I'm always happy with how much it pays.
Been with my doctor for years. He's an awesome doctor. Started with him at my job and been with him ever since. VSP is affordable for me and my family. Thanks.
Love VSP. I had it years ago and my insurance changed. I have it now and they are so easy to work with. Great benefits!
I enrolled because my insurance hardly covered my glasses. With insurance for exam frames and lenses I was paying out of pocket around $500, with VSP I paid out $215. Big savings so I now can go every year for my exams.
I knew I wanted a vision plan once I retired. VSP was an excellent choice with perfect coverage for a great price.
We were enrolled thru my husband’s job. When he retired we kept the plan. We are very pleased. Without it we would have to pay over $1,000 for mine and his glasses.
My husband and I both wear glasses so I love the discount on frames and lenses.
I joined VSP because the price of my glasses was increasing and they are only for close work and an astigmatism correction.
I held off getting new glasses for 2 years, even while paying VSP. I assumed the two pair I wanted, normal and reading glasses, would cost me over $1,000. I was shocked when I got both pairs for $875 total. Very happy with VSP.
Since becoming permanently disabled in 2016, Medicare does not have vision insurance, so I've been forced to pay for an individual plan on my own. With VSP, I pay a co-pay for doctor visits and my plan saves me a lot of money towards my frames and lenses; my cost is almost nothing out of pocket. VSP has the "best" individual vision plan that takes care of all of my needs as well as a great customer service team.
I enrolled because my job doesn't offer insurance. There is a great benefit about having this vision plan because my out of pocket price is much cheaper for contacts/glasses. It puts me in the driver seat with my eyes.
We had VSP while my husband was employed. Upon retiring, we now have it individually. We have been happy with the pay off and also the monthly premium. It pays quite well and really helps when on a retired income.
I like that the costs of my examination and glasses are reduced. I save over half on a new set of frames and lenses.
I have had a VSP plan for more than 28 years during my employment. However, since my retirement in 2018, I have tried several other plans that are out there, all have been unsatisfactory. My optomologist educated me that I could get an individual VSP plan. I switched and have been very pleased.
I have been a VSP customer for many years. It has given a peace of mind knowing that I can have my eyes checked on a regular basis. I am diabetic so that means quite a lot. My daughter has also become a VSP customer as well so it's become a family tradition.
VSP has been wonderful! While not in network of my Medicaid coverage, it's affordable and at my most recent appointment, the savings for frames was double than the clinic's sale. I am very pleased.
VSP is the only way for me get glasses. The savings is a great blessing. It is something to look into if you are on a budget. Thank you VSP.
I retired early, but don't have eye coverage. I'm surprised to have the same provider and the coverage was almost the same. Very happy to be a part of VSP.
I needed to get an exam and contacts for a while. Made an appt with a participating provider. All went very well and now I can see clearly again. Thank you VSP for being there at a time of need.
VSP has been a great service for my family. Glad to be part of the VSP family.
This plan is wonderful. I'm so thankful we have it. I can see now and it is wonderful, without this plan I wouldn't have got my glasses. Thank God for insurance. Highly recommend VSP!
I'm pleased to have my eye insurance through VSP. The rates were fair and since I'm on a fixed income I was able to easily sign up and find a local doctor that honored VSP.
I'm glad we have VSP. My wife and I both wear glasses and contacts and have annual eye exams. VSP helps cut down the cost of all these expenses.
My doctor is great. They pulled glasses similar to my previous ones. It made it easier to pick. I like the glasses.
My husband and I believe that VSP has saved us a lot of money on our eye care and glasses. My doctor's office even said that they love VSP because it's the best deal for their patients.
I'm very glad to have the VSP plan. It covered quite a bit for glasses that I knew were going to be super expensive. I am grateful to know that I didn't have to pay as much as I expected for my new eyeglasses :)
My family and I first joined VSP when they were young. This VSP-eligible eye glass store and optometrist were first rate and VSP coverage made it possible for the whole family to get the frames and lenses they wanted. My kids are grown up but I still use VSP although now I am retired and pay for it myself. Good value and great service - Thank you VSP!
I love, love VSP. My most recent appointment was the first one I had with VSP. I paid $258 for my appointment and new glasses that included the designer frames, progressive lenses, anti-glare coating and upgrade to lighter weight lenses. I had them check how much my last appointment was. It was $560. VSP is awesome.
VSP saves me a lot of money. I only paid $140 out of pocket. VSP is a fantastic plan to have especially if you're tight on money.
VSP has saved me a considerable amount of money buying eyeglasses. Without insurance, I would have paid $1,000 for my frames and lenses. Very grateful to have this affordable insurance!
I'm so glad I decided to get VSP! I saved so much money when I went to the eye Dr!! Thank you so much for providing excellent & affordable insurance!!
I'm very happy with my plan. My $10 copay for my yearly visit is fantastic. I also get my contacts at a very reasonable price.
I retired and no longer had a vision plan. I called the vision practice I belong to and asked them to recommend an insurance plan. They recommended VSP and I cannot tell you how happy I am I did. A reasonable insurance that covers a lot. I recommend VSP to people I know who are looking for coverage! Great Plan!
I had VSP through my employer and kept it after I retired. It saves me $$$ every year which is important on a fixed income.
I enrolled because Medicare doesn't provide vision care. With VSP I was able to retain the provider I had been seeing previously and the coverage has been excellent, including annual exam and new glasses that I desperately needed.
We have had VSP coverage for the past 2 years. It has saved us hundreds of dollars for our vision care. When I first used my coverage I had an issue with the provider and VSP worked very hard to help me resolve the problem. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of an eye care plan.
VSP has always been the best coverage through my Group Health plans throughout the years. Now that I am retired.....even though I have a Medicare Advantage plan with Vision, I felt it was important to also have VSP as they have never let me down. Simplicity and dependability are very important.
Recently obtained the eye plan. Had appointment within few weeks. Great coverage on glasses and lens. The office was so helpful and made sure I got all discounts which made my purchase very affordable. Great plan. Save me a lot of money.
I enrolled because my eye doctor is not covered by my Medicare Advantage plan and my wife needed new tri-focals. While we were at the eye doc for her, I had my eyes examined as it had been several years. Our VSP individual plan saved us between $500 - $600 this year. Very worth while!
When I retired and lost coverage from my company, I was concerned I would not have coverage. I signed up for the VSP plan and used it for the first time. It was equivalent to the coverage I received from the work policy. I was thrilled that I didn't have to pay more on my personal policy!!
I'm enrolled in VSP because I'm retired. The last pair of glasses I got I paid only fifty dollars on them. I was extremely satisfied with my policy. My wife paid the same also. The only reason we had to pay any additional was we had protection added to our lenses.
I am so thankful to have this vision insurance. I've had great experiences with this plan and how it has helped my family and myself have the best vision possible. I have a family history of eye issues. My mom lost her vision, due to a bleed in her optic nerve in her late 80's, and I want to be sure I get mine taken care of so I can be monitored for anything similar.
My daughter recently needed glasses and the benefits I have through VSP made it possible for us to purchase not one, but two pairs of glasses for her before school started. Thank you!
I have been with VSP for a great amount of years. I had it thru my employer and company folded, but I still keep it and pay for each month. I have not had any problems with getting an eye exam and also paying for glasses. It is great with the amount they give you to spend.
I wear progressives and VSP saves me money on the lens, the special coatings and frames. I also save on the annual exam. The doctor's office knows VSP and explains my benefits so I get the best deals on glasses. I pay about a third of what I would have to pay out of pocket.
I started purchasing my own VSP vision coverage because #1 was cheaper than thru my employer; #2 I could go after January 1st every year (did not have to wait one full year between eye exams); #3 could get new frames every year (instead of every other year). Also save a lot on out of pocket expense on new glasses, even though I have the cheaper plan. Worth every penny !!!! Highly recommend!
I really appreciate the help with my eye care and the ease of getting my prescription for my glasses. Thanks for your care and coverage.
I retired and had no eye care. When I started my Social Security, I knew I had to find some insurance since I wear glasses. I researched some carriers and decided I'd go with something I knew. I had VSP while working and was happy to find I could get individual coverage. They have saved me a few hundred dollars already this year. I would tell anyone looking for eye care coverage-check out VSP. They have various levels of coverage to choose from and it is well worth the premium.
My VSP plan allows me to continue with my doctor and there glasses. Without VSP, the costs would cause most to move away to a more discount eye care and lose the premium eye care they could receive.
Took VSP insurance because my employer had offered VSP. So once I retired it was natural for me to enroll in VSP insurance. So many eye care centers accept VSP insurance in my area that it makes it easy to use. Highly recommend VSP eye insurance to anyone.
When I retired, transitioned from company vision insurance to VSP. The best part about the transition is that I saw no reduced coverage and I kept my vision provider. And the annual cost of VSP is very affordable!
Generally, you see a stark difference between the employer sponsored plan and individual ones. I am happy to see that this is not the case with VSP. I've used both types of plans and they are affordable, allow me to remain with my Optometrist and the coverage is equally good. Using VSP employed, or not, ensures my vision remains in good health.
I have went so long without glasses and I couldn't drive at night. When I found out about VSP I was able to get some really nice glasses at a very affordable price and I'm able to also add my wife to my plan so she can get hers.
VSP gave me access to an eye doctor that my work insurance did not. So I enrolled the family - and it has been working out great! I have access to a doctor I like, I get a great deal on glasses and lenses!!
Very happy with the cost and the benefits. Being able to get my eyes checked and new glasses every year is a step from my old plan through my employer. It's great knowing that when my eyesight changes, I can change my glasses as well.
We had VSP with my husband's job before retirement. MEDICARE does not cover eyecare. VSP covers better now than it did with with his employment! The monthly premium is manageable on our retirement income.
I am so glad I and my wife have my plan. I paid nothing except a monthly $24 statement and without it we would have paid over $1000 we would not have been able to afford our lenses (the most expensive part) and our eyesight would have suffered for it.
I was so glad that Visionworks sent me the information about VSP. I filled out the information and I was accepted right there. I was so happy that I made my appointment the same day. Without VSP I don't know how I was going to get new glasses. I was past my time to get new ones.
I had to get my individual VSP Plan. For as long as I can remember I've always been able to use VSP Vision Plans through Employment and my husband's VSP Plans with his employer and always saved money and gotten great eyecare. To us VSP Plan can't be beat..once you use the VSP Plan you can't live without it. So when I couldn't work anymore and get the VSP Plan I inquired about the individual VSP Plans and got a reasonable rate on my own..I love it and will continue to have a VSP Plan on my own and the Opticians that accept VSP Plans are great too!
Since I'm on a fixed income I enrolled because it fits my monthly budget. When it comes time to be seen I know exactly what I pay in deductible and exactly what my benefit covers. I am 100% satisfied with VSP! I just renewed my policy as I have for 5+ years.
We are retired and Medicare Advantage only has minimal coverage for vision. Our VSP plan covers so much more and makes glasses affordable. We were paying close to $1,000 each for glasses. With VSP my last ones were under $200. Great plan at reasonable price.
I enrolled for couple of reasons: My husband's employer had changed plans and made it to where we could only see certain doctors in our area (None of them that we liked). I decided to look into purchasing a plan on my own to allow us to keep our doctor. I am glad that I did as I actually have better coverage and am able to keep our doctor. We've actually had VSP for years and have never had an issue and have always been pleased. Plans are affordable and does save you money.
The staff is professional, courteous and knowledgeable. My doctor informs me of the status of my eyes and how to take care of them. He gives me options and allows me to make a decision.
Took an early retirement but have to pay for my own health, dental, and vision insurance. I have had VSP now for few years and use Visionworks for my annual checkups, retinal scans, glaucoma test, contacts, and eyewear. The locations and hours are convenient and the exams are thorough.
My husband and I had no insurance to cover eye care. With VSP over half of the expenses were covered. The premium was so affordable. VSP would notify me when it was time for another exam. I will never look for any other coverage. Never a hassle, it just gets paid. I feel that VSP looks out for me. Now that I am a widowed senior means so much to me.
I've been very pleased with my VSP plan! This plan affords me to be able to get the glasses I want!
VSP does help save my money. I have had with VSP for 2 years and I will continue use them. I would recommend them to anyone. Keep up good work and look forward to see improvement. Thank you.
VSP is perfect for me. I had to retire early because of health issues, it's perfect for me. Low cost makes it affordable and covers my eye care needs.
We are retired so have to purchase our own vision insurance. Our doctor said VSP is the best and we've been happy with it for a few years.
I've saved so much money on eyeglasses and eye exams thanks to this plan. Really helpful and appreciated, as my employer does not offer a vision plan.
I am happy that I have this plan, I purchased it when I retired and no longer had eye care insurance. It pays well and the eye glasses that they offer are top brand for a great price.
My plan saved me a lot of money on my eye exam, frames and lenses. I gave my account information to the billling dept and they were able to instantly tell me how much of the bill was my mine to pay. There was no delay in VSP paying their share.
I had to wait to have my eyes examined because I couldn't afford to have it done. When a friend told me about VSP I looked into it. I found I could afford to go to an eye dr. When I had my eyes examined the dr. told me I would not have passed at the DMV eye test. So glad I went to VSP. Thank you.
I am an enrollee in the individual plan for VSP because I am a college student with a unique eye description: far-sighted in one and near-sighted in the other. I need the BEST coverage and VSP offers it.
As a retired senior, the plan has helped me afford my yearly testing for glaucoma and cataracts, plus allows new frames and sunglasses! It's great!!
After my VSP plan expired from my job when I retired, I continued to stay with VSP and the prices are the same as when I was working. In addition, having the insurance helps in being able to buy glasses each year if I choose. I just wish the frames that are available today were much less expensive. Wish VSP would offer their own stylish frames at a much more reasonable price. Lastly, I'm very happy to continue seeing my eye doctor, who is very knowledgeable and who I have been with for more than 20 yrs. Thanks VSP for not gouging us with enormous price increases. It's smart health care.
I have been with VSP for quite sometime now. I enrolled in VSP through my job in 2018 or 2019 and has had it ever since. They are very affordable and customer support is very good.
I highly recommend VSP. This insurance has saved me thousands of dollars and the process is so easy. From cataract surgery to just my yearly eye exams, I couldn't be more pleased..
I had eye insurance until I retired, then I was dropped from their plan and had to look for another insurance plan. I was told about VSP and immediately sign up. It's been very good insurance, covering most, if not all of my eye care needs. When my husband retired (from the same company), I added him as a member too. We are thankful for VSP and their easy way of covering our eyecare needs.
I previously had VSP coverage with a previous employer and it was great coverage. When my situation changed with coverage, I looked into the individual plans offered and was pleasantly surprised at the low cost for coverage. It's been 4 years now and I can't imagine not paying for my own coverage to assure I don't get burden with out of pocket costs.
I am retired now and needed a Vision Plan so chose this one as this is the plan I had when I was working, and I was very happy with it. It has saved me so much money so I am very pleased.
I retired early a couple of years ago and needed to find a vision plan that would work for me. When I was actively working all my employers offered VSP so I knew the product and benefits well. I was so pleased to learn that VSP also offered an individual vision plan for those of us without a company sponored plan. I've used the plan a few times now for my annual visits, frames and lenses without any problems. The plan is also very affordable. I'm very happy with the plan and intend to keep it!
It has been 17 years since I upgraded my glasses prescription. I REALLY needed to, so I shopped around for a couple weeks. VSP ended up being the best bet for my needs and money. I paid the whole year upfront (at an INCREDIBLY LOW PRICE) and got new glasses a couple of weeks later. Highly recommended!
I am retired on Social Security and didn't have a vision plan. I was able to find a qualified doctor in the VSP network and scheduled an appointment the week after I enrolled in the program. I was able to save VSP. I have macular degeneration and require injections in my eyes every month.
I'm grateful to have a plan for my vision since I wear glasses 24 seven since I was five years old. If I didn't have this vision plan, I'd be paying almost $1000 each year for my glasses.
